On the day of Mahashivaratri, people will get up early morning before sunrise and they take a ritual bath. After taking a holy bath in some nearest river people will wear new or fresh dresses. In that morning people will go to the nearest Shiva temple and they pray for Lord Shiva. In the temple, people pray and Jal Abhishek in the ShivaLinga with six different dravyas. After offering many things and pray morning in the temple, devotees will fast hole day and night for 24 hours. In the Evening and night of Mahashivratri devotee will burn Dhoni ( burn a big piece of wood). People take Gaja, Bhang, etc in this night to make Lord Shiva happy.
What is the story behind Maha Shivratri?
According to Shiva Puran long time ago, there was a Hunter named Guru Dhruv in a jungle. He always used to hunt wild animals to eat to stay alive. On one day of Shivratri, the hunter goes to the jungle to hunt but unfortunately, he cannot find any animals to hunt. He stays the whole day without eating and drinking anything. He was worried about his family because there are not anythings to eat in their house.
After sunset, he went to a river and take some water on a pot and climb a tree. Because he believes that some thirsty animals will come there to drink water. The tree where he was climbed is a tree of Belpatra. There was also a Shivling in the down of the tree and which was covered by many dry Belpatra.
the night he saw a Deer came to drink water and he did his Arros to attack the deer. When he did his weapons, by mistakenly some green leaves and the water of his pot go right down to the Shivling and his first Puja was done. And suddenly the deer saw Orion and she said Orion didn’t kill her. But the Hunter said to the deer, I and my family are hungry so I cannot leave you. The deer said to Orion she also has some small baby and that they are expecting here, so let me go. once I give my small baby to my husband then I will be able to come and you’ll kill me. After he listens to the deer Orion lets the deer return.
After a while, Orion saw another deer within the river and he makes his weapons ready. this point also his hand gives pressure to the tree and a few leaves of that tree and a few drops of waters go right down to the Shivling. Mistakenly the second Puja also did by the hunter. The deer also start to mention to Orion doesn’t kill him now because his babies are expecting him. He promises to return back again. and therefore the hunter let him return. After a while, both deers came there with their babies and suddenly he makes ready his weapons to kill them. Again this point due to his movement some Belpatra and water sink to the Shivling and his third puja also done.
When done his third puja he got some knowledge and he said to the deers that he will not kill them and he let them go back. After he saves the deers lord Shiva so happy and excuse all his mistakes and appeared there. When the Hunder saw lord shiva he let down on the foot of Lord Shiva. Shiva is happy and blessed him to get happiness and wealth. So people start to celebrate the Mahashivratri festival.
